The Road Well Traveled.....and a Giveaway!

This past weekend was COLD, we have basically been in a deep freeze since the blizzard last month. But we had to get out of the house so Don (Dear Husband) suggested a hike up to Jefferson's Rock in Harper's Ferry, WV. It's only a 20 minute drive from our house....north over the Potomac River into Maryland, back south over the Potomac again into VA and then to WV going over the Shenandoah River. Love, love, love that drive.

And once you get to the rock this is the view you see...that bridge is the second one of the three we went over. To the right is Virginia, to the left is Maryland and we were standing in WV!

And further up the stone steps is Harper Cemetery...very beautiful, simple and peaceful.

Something else fun I am doing is this
Doll Quilt Swap 8...yes, there have been 7 of them that I missed but I'm so glad to be participating now!:) It is already so much fun and all we have done is received our partners. I have to make, by the end of February, a quilt anywhere in size from 12"x 12" to 24"x 24" and send it to my secret partner...he/she doesn't know it will be coming from me! And in turn I will be getting a quilt at the same time from whoever got me...I guess this is like a Round-Robin but we keep what we are sent! We leave hints and comments on the DQS8 Flickr group and just generally have fun....I got my idea in a dream....need to leave another hint!;)

Ok....now for what you've been waiting for...the Giveaway!! Here is a tablerunner I made out

of some leftover squares from my Whimsical Wonky Quilt which is now resting happily at my parent's house!:) Here's all you have to do....leave me a comment...tell me where you have been hiking lately, and if you let people know about this giveaway on your blog you can come back and leave another comment letting me know!:) Make sure you leave some way for me to let you know you are the winner! Easy Peasy!!:o)

Let's see.....umm....how about I use the Random Generator on Sunday at 6pm EST. Okay?:)

See you Sunday!!

PS.....just watched the first episode of the new season of American Idol and that young girl, Maddy Curtis, goes to our local High School!:) And Marguerite...you best be feeling better!;)

  1. I watched it too!!! We live in Mississippi, so we don't have many to hike. My fave place I have been is in the Smokey Mtns, in NC. We have taken the kids to the state park near by.

  2. What a beautiful hike! I don't have too many places to hike near my house but our favorite walk to a nature trail through our local wildlife refuge. And by "our" I mean me and my dog! Fall is my favorite time to walk there and I bet winter is pretty too. Maybe we'll go this weekend!

Thanks for the fun giveaway! That runner is sweeeeet!

  3. O.K. not sure if it counts as a "hike", but we have lots of nature trails with walking/bike paths running through our town. One of these happen to run through our neighborhood. My daughter and I were walking last week, even though there are houses that back up to the trail, we spotted A TON (or gaggle?), of geese, and at least five deer. I love being able to step out my door and be able to enjoy nature, even though I live in a populated Northern California city!

  4. Beautiful photos...it's been years since I visited that area. As for "hiking"...the only type I've been able to do lately is around my work area at my 2 jobs:) Luckily, one of the jobs is at Joann's...so my "hikes" are always filled with some lovely views[which I have "bought/brought" home with me].

  6. The last hiking I did was all over the christmas tree farm (they're huge here in Washington state.) Before that was at a bird sanctuary near Las Vegas when we were down there for the SEMA show.

Other than that, it's been a wee bit too cold or sopping wet to hike.

  7. I haven't hiked anywhere since Oct, when we were out in Steamboat Springs, CO. We've had snow and ice here for what seems like forever so just going to the mailbox can be an adventure!

Thanks for the nice blog, Roo, and I love your header. Did that come to you in a dream, too? It's just lovely.

And I would LOVE that runner, if I was lucky enough to win it. I don't have a single one in my house, our table is NEKKID, do I get an extra entry for being pathetic, maybe? lol

  8. Hiking? Er.......does shopping round Tesco count? We cycle to a nearby village along a farm track sometimes. Will that do? That's a gorgeous runner, it would be very at home in my kitchen!!!

  9. Can't say I've hiked anywhere very recently, but there is a lovely conservation area just outside of town for x-country skiing and snow-shoeing. Have I been there this winter? Um... no... but I will - it's on my New Year's list to do this month. Runner is gorgeous - thanks for the chance!

  10. I walk every day but it is usually inside around the gym because it is way to cold and snowy/icy around here lately but I need the exercise. Love your table runner and the glimpses of your DQS8 sketch. Thanks for the chance.

  12. Hiking . . .hmm, if I had snow shoes I would hike at a great natural prairie about 20 miles from my house in the great Loess Hills (western edge of Iowa). Very gently rolling hills, wild life, and in the spring, cascades of wild flowers! Welcome to DSQ8--it's great fun!

  13. My son and I are going on a touring hike with a historian in our town on the 23rd, it should be interesting, I'm sure I will find out lots of stuff I don't know about my town. Beautiful table runner - you are so nice.

  14. What a beautiful place to hike! I haven't hiked in a while, but the last place was the Sierra Mountains, which we did with several of our grown kids and their spouses. One of my favorite spots is Rainbow Falls.

That's a lovely table runner! My table is bare too. I haven't put anything on it since I took off the Christmas tablecloth!

  16. well, Iam not sure if it is classed as hiking, but over Christmas my husband and I went up to the Yorkshire Dales where my daughter lives, and we had a hike up to where we could get a good sledge run with the grandchildren. We love walking in the dales, but who wouldn't. I love your table runners, and if I miss out on this one, I will have to add it to my 'to do list'. Sewjo 2009 (Hope you can get me through flickr) or else still have details of the Secret Santa address?.

  18. What a nice giveaway! Beautiful runner! The last time I did any hiking was before winter hit! Too cold here and too much snow, but my favorite hike is early summer in our rocky mountains at Snowbird when the wildflowers are in full bloom! Love to photograph the wildflowers every year!

  19. What a great giveaway! I am in the doll quilt swap as well. Loads of fun! Can't wait to see what you come up with!

  20. Wow - what a fascinating bit of geography there - three states in 20 minutes!
Alas I haven't been hiking at all recently, unless you count walking to the shops and bringing home shopping! Or walking around my husband's family's suburb - maybe that is suburban hiking? Unlike there, it's been rather hot here on the weekends (high 90s/low 100s) and that is Too Hot For Hiking (and for the little car with a leaky radiator that we have on loan from friends).
Here's a link to some of my favourite places for hiking.

  21. Beautiful photos! I grew up in Maryland and have been there before but not in a few years. Used to love walking the main street there in Harpers Ferry too. Walking up north is so different from here in FL. lol But I still love it here.

The runner would be perfect on my kitchen table! :)

  22. I could have sworn I entered this before . . . but I don't see my name!

    Anyway, beautiful runner!!!

  23. Love the photos. I wish there was someplace here to hike. We really have no scenery here in Texas where I live. The best I can do is walk in a park but it's such a let down because there are no animals and the trails are torn up and in one park there is graffiti on a few fences and buildings. Because it gets so hot here most of the year I like to walk on my treadmill and zone out with some good tunes. I love that you are giving away a gorgeous table runner and being environmentally sound with using scraps to make it. It would look lovely on my naked dining room table. Please add my name to the hat for a chance to win.
